This will forever be one of my favorite photos. The 'Love Bowls' was an abandoned car cove where they shot car commercials in the middle of the desert outside Phoenix.

It's been torn down for years now, but it was a really cool spot. Well, cool for photographers—skaters hated it. The transitions were extremely tight.

I’m pretty sure it was the first trip I was on with Chad. We did a few to AZ during that time period, and I was so hyped on this one.

It was way back in the film days, so I had to wait a week to see it. I was still very new to photography—maybe only a couple of years in. When I made the first print and saw what I had, I was beyond stoked. Back in the film days, you had to run a red filter on the lens to get that black sky. This spot was begging for it. But that also meant I had to open up three stops to get the exposure right.

Shooting fast-moving things with those extra three stops made it tricky with shutter speeds. I pushed the Ilford Delta 100 I had to its limits, but we got a good one. Oh, and by the way, Chad pushed to that thing! No roll-in, no slingshot, no tow—and the cops kept driving by but we got it before they finally pulled in to tell us to leave.
